Auto Coverages Explained

Auto Insurance Is Required By Law In Most States

Auto insurance provides some financial protection in case you get in an accident. The reality is, car insurance is a complicated matter. Many people have an insurance policy but don’t exactly understand how they’re covered or what they’ll do if they actually need to use their insurance.

Sherrye LaCour Insurance will explain the basic types of auto insurance. When you’re ready, we can help you get the coverage you need for your particular situation.

Auto Insurance Coverages

Liability Coverage

This covers the damages when you’re at fault in an accident, and you damage somebody else’s car or property. Liability coverage is required by MS law and most other states, and we’ll explain the requirements below. As the driver, you must make sure you have an adequate amount.

Collision Coverage

This is the basic insurance type that covers your vehicle if you collide with something. This can pay for repairs to or replacement of your damaged vehicle following a car accident—meaning collisions with other cars and if you were to run into a wall, barrier, or bridge.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Did you know that 29.4% of drivers in Mississippi are uninsured?! If you are hit by another driver, there’s a chance that you’ve been involved in an accident with a person who has NO insurance. Consider buying UM/UIM coverage.

Comprehensive Coverage

This covers anything that may happen to your car that’s not directly linked to a collision. Comprehensive coverage includes things such as fire, theft, hitting a deer, or hail damage.

Important Note: Collision or comprehensive coverage may be required under the terms of a vehicle lease or financing agreement.

Medical Payments

This is also called PIP in some states. Medical payments would pay for any injuries to the driver or passengers if an accident occurred while driving. Medical payment insurance varies by state, so make sure you’re covered as expected.

What Are the Car Insurance Requirements in Mississippi?

All Mississippi drivers must retain liability insurance and provide paper or electronic proof that the vehicle is insured. These minimum amounts of coverage are required:

  • $25,000 liability coverage for bodily injury or death of someone in an accident—caused by the driver/owner of the insured vehicle.
  • $50,000 liability coverage for total bodily injury or death liability in an accident—caused by the driver/owner of the insured vehicle.
  • $25,000 liability coverage for property damage per accident—caused by the driver/owner of the insured vehicle.

In other words, in the event of a covered accident, your limits for bodily injury are $25,000/person, with a total maximum of $50,000/incident.

*Requirements vary by state – be sure to check your state’s requirements.

More on Liability Coverage

Liability coverage pays the medical and property damage bills, as well as other costs of passengers, drivers, and pedestrians who are injured or have their car damaged in an accident you cause—up to coverage limits.

You can (and sometimes should) have more coverage to protect you in case a severe crash causes significant injuries and vehicle damage. Higher insurance limits can better protect your personal assets if a serious crash occurs. Your liability coverage will likely cover you if you get in a wreck while driving a rental car.
